The total production of electricity posted an increase of 2%, at the end of August 2021, to 13, 838 Gigawatt-hour (GWh), excluding self-generation consumed, against 13,576 GWh at the end of August 2020, said the monthly report on the energy situation for the month of August 2021, published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines Thursday.
According to the same document, electricity for the local market has seen a sharper increase of 10%. The electrical peak grew by 11% to 4472 MW at the end of August 2021 against 4030 MW, at the end of August 2020 (a new record).
STEG still retains the lion’s share of electricity production with 84% of domestic production. The electricity produced from natural gas (STEG + Independent producers) has increased by 4%. The production of electricity from renewable energy sources was 2.4% (taking into account the production of power plants only).
Electricity sales up 5% at end of August 2021
Electricity sales went up by 5% between the end of August 2020 and the end of August 2021. Sales to high voltage customers increased by 24%. Sales to medium voltage customers grew by 7%.
As regards low voltage sales, which are mainly intended for the residential sector (nearly 75% on average), statistics based on bimonthly billing, of which nearly half is estimated, do not give an exact idea of actual consumption.
The industrial sector remains the largest consumer of electricity with 61% of the total demand of high voltage and medium voltage customers at the end of August 2021.
