National Assembly President ‘Shocked’ By Egypt’s Death Sentence

Bardo, — The Presidency of the National Constituent Assembly expressed shock at the death sentence pronounced against leaders and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood including the last speaker and members of the Egyptian parliament.

“This verdict that was rendered in defiance to the attributes of human rights and sparked deep outrage of the international community and all parties concerned by human rights issues is likely to complicate the security situation in Egypt, increase the wave of tensions, exacerbate hatred, undermine the unity of the Egyptian people and jeopardize the gains of their Revolution,” the NCA Presidency said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The Presidency of the Assembly also said “these mass sentences are incompatible with the values and ideals of the Arab Spring Revolutions, particularly the right of everyone to express their opinion democratically and freely and denounce injustice and arbitrariness.”

While noting that such sentences do not meet the requirements of a fair trial and flout international human rights conventions, the NCA Presidency expressed hope to see justice fulfill its basic function, away from any form of exploitation, according to the same statement.

It requested the Egyptian authorities to “take the necessary steps to reduce tension, by starting with releasing MPs.”
