Parliament passes 3 loan agreements to fund Saida and Kalaa Kebira dam projects

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) passed at a plenary session Tuesday three bills approving three loan agreements between Tunisia and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for the contribution to the funding the construction project of the Saida and Kalaa Kebira dams and associated water transfer works.

The overall cost of the project is 599 million dinars (MD) and the IsDB will contribute Euros 71.78 million, or about 210 MD.

The first bill approves the loan agreement between Tunisia and the IsDB for the contribution to funding the preparation phase of the project for the construction of the Saida and Kalaa Kebira dams and relevant water transfer works, worth Euros 3.070 million.

The second pertains to the approval of the loan agreement between Tunisia and the IsDB for the contribution to the financing of that project worth Euros 11.760 million.

The third bill approves the installment agreement between Tunisia and the Islamic Development Bank for the contribution to the financing of the project amounting to Euros 56.950 million.

This project aims to cover the drinking water needs of the regions of Greater-Tunis, Cap Bon, Sahel and Sfax, by 2030, to provide additional quantities of water for irrigation in Cape Bon and build a reserve stock of drinking water.

The two dams will be equipped with pipelines over a length of 72 km and 4 pumping stations and 3 cisterns that will be integrated into the network to ensure the distribution of water in the regions concerned.
