Keta: Parts of Keta Market in the Volta Region have been submerged after over four hours of heavy downpour in the early hours of Friday, September 12, 2025. The flood appeared to be linked to several factors such as choked gutters, improper site planning, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which allegedly contributed to the situation.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Seyram Amidu, a resident of Keta Central, mentioned in an interview that the floodwaters have submerged parts of the market including the entrance, roads, and the lorry station. She expressed relief that it was not a Market Day, which would have exacerbated the situation. Concerns were raised about the floodwaters entering stores, posing risks to food safety and storage. The disruptions could severely affect economic stability, and she called for urgent intervention to support traders affected by the flood.
Madam Amidu emphasized the necessity of proper drainage systems to mitigate future flooding and appealed to officials, including the Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Wisdom Seade, to help construct flood-resistant infrastructure. She urged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to assess the damage and provide necessary support.
Keta has experienced similar flooding in the past, displacing homes in various areas, and affecting schools like Keta Senior High Basic School, Norlivime Basic, and Bishop Herman Basic. The GNA understands that Keta, being a low-lying area, is prone to flooding, impacting residential neighborhoods and farmlands. Residents often resort to makeshift barriers, which may not suffice against severe flooding.
Traders and residents have appealed to authorities to allocate part of the market revenues to construct better drainage systems to prevent further flooding and ensure smooth business operations. The GNA also reported that many roads within Keta were flooded, complicating access for motorists.
