Dormaa municipality: A group of individuals living with skin-related neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in the Dormaa Municipality have been provided with livelihood support packages valued at over GHS52,000. The initiative aims to enhance their quality of life and promote financial independence. The assistance, provided by MIHOSO International Foundation, includes freezers, start-up tools, monetary contributions, and goats for livestock production. According to Ghana News Agency, the beneficiaries, who are affected by conditions such as leprosy, buruli ulcer, yaws, and elephantiasis, reside in communities including Masu, Taforo, Babianiha, Badu-krom, Kuren, Asuhia, Asikesu Number One, and Bene-krom. Mr. Thomas Benarkuu, Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of operations at MIHOSO International Foundation, highlighted that the donation aligns with a broader project undertaken in collaboration with BasicNeeds Ghana. The initiative, titled 'Building a Civil Society Coalition to Advocate for an Integrated A pproach to Control Skin-NTDs and Enhance the Quality of Life of Vulnerable and Affected People in Ghana,' is being carried out in 11 districts across six regions of the country. The project, funded by the Anesyad Foundation, focuses on eradicating Skin-NTDs and improving the socio-economic conditions of those affected. It also aims to alleviate the disease burden on individuals and the health system, particularly at the Primary Health Care level. Mr. Benarkuu emphasized that the support package represents a milestone in efforts to empower beneficiaries, promote sustainable livelihoods, and improve well-being in the affected communities. The support is tailored to address the specific needs of recipients, facilitating their journey towards financial independence, social integration, and psychological well-being. Mr. Benarkuu further stated that the core mandate of MIHOSO and BasicNeeds Ghana is to empower individuals affected by NTDs to lead dignified lives and foster an inclusive environment that enhances t he quality of life and societal inclusion for those with Skin-NTDs. He affirmed the foundation's commitment to combating stigma and discrimination associated with these diseases while promoting sustainable development in marginalized communities.
