PM lays first stone for Sidi Abdelhamid seawater desalination station project

Premier Youssef Chahed Wednesday laid the first stone for Sidi Abdelhamid seawater desalination station project (governorate of Sousse); the plant is expected to come into operation in June 2019.

The station, which will be built at the cost of 127 MTD, will desalinate about 50,000 cubic metres of seawater/day in a first stage. Its desalination capacity can be brought to 100,000 cubic metres/day in a second stage.

The desalination plant fits within a programme aimed to increase water resources in 2017/2019 and enhance the drinking water distribution system in the regions of Cap Bon, Sahel, Sfax and Kairouan, said CEO of the National Water Distribution Utility (SONEDE) Mosbeh Helali.

This plant will help meet the additional water demand in these areas and avoid the shortage seen in recent years, notably in the summer season.
