Edwenase: The Asante Bekwai police is investigating the death of a 37-year-old nurse, who was found hanging in one of the rooms in her family house at Edwenase in the Bekwai Municipality. The deceased, Akosua Adutwumwaa, a nurse at the Kokofu government hospital, was said to have committed suicide through hanging in her room on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, family members reported that Adutwumwaa began her day on Sunday morning as usual-rising early, tending to household chores, and preparing porridge for her only child, a two-year-old daughter. The morning routine showed no sign of distress or anything unusual. However, at about 0800 hours when members of the family were preparing to attend church service, they noticed that Adutwumwaa was not around.
A frantic search around the house and neighborhood ensued, but it ended in heartbreak when she was discovered lifeless in one of the rooms, hanging from a ceiling fan with a white rope around her neck. The discovery left her family and the entire Edwenase community in shock. Some residents in the community, who described the deceased as quiet, hardworking, and devoted to her child and profession, are struggling to come to terms with the loss.
It was reported that this was the first time such a tragic incident occurred in the community and has further intensified the community's grief and disbelief. Her body has since been conveyed to the Pramso Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted under the supervision of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command. Police investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death, including any underlying issues that may have contributed to her decision.
The management of Kokofu government hospital has expressed their sorrow over the incident, describing the late nurse as a dedicated health professional who served with compassion and diligence. Hospital authorities have also indicated their intention to provide psychological support to staff members as they come to terms with the tragic loss of their colleague.
Meanwhile, friends and loved ones have begun flooding social media with tributes and messages of support for her grieving family, especially her young daughter who now faces life without her mother. This incident has reignited conversations around mental health in the health sector, especially the emotional toll and silent battles healthcare professionals may face. Many are calling for stronger support systems, mental health awareness, and interventions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, the community of Edwenase mourns not just a nurse, but a mother, daughter, and beloved member of society, whose sudden departure leaves behind pain and unanswered questions.
