Political parties and associations call for restoring ties with Syria

Representatives of political parties and associations, on Tuesday, rallied outside the parliament to demand the restoration of ties with Syria.

A relevant motion was presented by members of four parliamentary blocs to the House of People’s Representatives (HPR).

During the rally, protesters stressed the need to re-open the Syrian embassy in Tunis and to remedy the “mistake made by previous governments in deciding to cut Tunisian-Syrian ties.

Members of parliamentary blocs had presented last April 13 a draft motion for the restoration of diplomatic relations with Syria.

The motion, signed by four presidents of parliamentary groups (Al-Horra, the Popular Front, Free Patriotic Union and Afek Tounes), was proposed by MPs who visited Syria as part of efforts to reconnect with Syria.

That delegation consisted of Mbarka Aouania, Mongi Rahoui, Abdelaziz Kotti, Khemaies Ksila, Issam Mattoussi, Sahbi Ben Fraj and Noureddine Mrabti.

Tuesday’s rally was organised by “the Popular Current”, “Al-Nidhal al-Watani” movement, “Al-Mourabitoun”, the “Tunisian League for Tolerance”, “Association of Syrian Nationals in Tunisia and the National Authority for Supporting Arab Resistance and Fighting Normalisation with the Zionist Entity “.
