Political Science Students Association Honours Akwasi Opong-Fosu

Accra: The Political Science Students Association (POSSA) Inter-Tertiary Connect Initiative has paid tribute to Mr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, President of Africa Growth Solution, for his significant contributions to the organization’s first edition.

According to Ghana News Agency, the recognition was encapsulated in a citation that praised Mr. Opong-Fosu for his tremendous contribution to the success of the initiative. The citation highlighted his commitment to academic excellence and his dedication to shaping the future of Political Science students across various universities in Ghana.

Mr. Opong-Fosu, who previously served as the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, reflected on the motivations of student and youth leaders. He noted that in past eras, youth activism was driven by ideological convictions such as nationalism and patriotism. However, he observed that current motivations are often centered around seeking power, fame, privilege, and material gains.

He expressed concern that the lessons of probity and accountability in public office have been neglected, leading to frequent instances of corruption and unethical behavior. Mr. Opong-Fosu emphasized that a “reset agenda” in governance would require a shift in mindset regarding leadership and governance principles.

He cited the examples of countries like China, South Korea, and Singapore, which have advanced from similar developmental stages as Ghana at the time of independence to become developed nations. This progress, he argued, was achieved through a mindset shift towards wealth creation and self-reliance.
