Poverty rate in Tunisia drops 5% in 2015

The poverty rate in Tunisia has decreased by 5% to 15.2% in 2015, compared to 20.5% in 2010 and 23.1% in 2005, according to the results of the five-year consumption survey presented Friday by the director of the National Statistics Institute, Hedi Saidi.

The results of the survey revealed that “the severe or extreme” poverty rate is estimated at 2.9 per cent in 2015, compared to 6 % in 2010 and 7.4 % in 2005, he stressed at a news conference in Tunis.

The poverty rate varies considerably, depending on regions in Tunisia with a considerable gap between certain regions. Thus the poverty rate reached 5.3 in Greater Tunis in 2015 against 34.9% in Kairouan, a gap of 30%.

The midwest and the northwest of the country still have the highest poverty rates, followed by southern regions. The midwest region posted a decrease in the poverty rate to 30.8% in 2015 against 42.3% in 2010, Greater Tunis reaches 5.3% against 11.1% previously. Extreme poverty declined in the south-western region from 7.7% to 2.6%.

Results by region show that the poverty rate is particularly concentrated in western regions and some governorates of the South, thus exceeding the national average, as is the case in El Kef, Kasserine and Beja, where Poverty stands at 34.2%, 32.8% and 32%, respectively.

The extreme poverty rates vary among governorates. The problem is almost absent in certain governorates such as those of Greater Tunis, Nabeul, Monastir and Sfax. On the other hand, it is relatively significant in other regions like Kairouan, Siliana and Medenine where it reaches 10.3%, 8.8% and 4.7%, respectively.

Saidi noted that this five-year survey carried out between 2015 and 2016 focused on the consumption of Tunisian citizens in all regions and during all seasons thanks to the doubling of the number of people interviewed from 13,500 families in 2010 to about 27,108 in 2015.
