Tunis: President Kais Saied has issued a presidential pardon benefiting a number of inmates, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr and the 70th anniversary of Independence, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Presidency of the Republic. The pardon will result in the release of 1,473 prisoners and a reduction of sentences for 835 others. The Head of State also instructed that 416 additional inmates be granted conditional release. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Pressel, this move is part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting reconciliation and offering a fresh start to those who have shown signs of rehabilitation. The decision has been welcomed by many as a significant gesture of goodwill during these important national celebrations. The Presidency emphasized that the pardon reflects the values of forgiveness and renewal, underscoring the importance of integrating reformed individuals back into society. The statement further clarified that the selection of inmates eligible for pardon was based o n strict criteria, ensuring that only those who have demonstrated genuine reform and pose no threat to public safety are considered. The initiative is expected to alleviate some of the congestion in prisons, contributing to improved conditions for remaining inmates.
