Tunisia: President Kais Saed, Thursday, called for urgent action to address the difficulties faced by farmers. The Head of State made the call during a meeting at Carthage Palace with Hamadi Hbeib, Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries in charge of water; Moez Ben Amor, Director General of the National Olive Oil Office (ONH); and Helmi Kala, Acting Director General of the Interprofessional Groups for Dates and for Fruit.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, this appeal comes as part of President Saed's ongoing monitoring of the situation across various regions of the country, following what he described as a 'deliberate' drop in the purchase price of dates imposed by intermediaries. The President deplored that such actions have forced many farmers to abandon their harvests, as witnessed in Jemna, Blida, and other date-producing regions in Tunisia.
He pointed out that these unfair practices are not confined to the date sector but also affect other agricultural products, including olive oil, citrus fruits, and more. The President vowed "to hold accountable those who have betrayed the Tunisian people and who continue to sow division and discord through deceitful and manipulative tactics."
