President Kaïs Saïed visited, Saturday evening, the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior, in Tunis, where he met with the Minister of Interior and several senior officials of the department.
He stressed, on this occasion, the right of Tunisians to demonstrate “to express their positions, commemorate the martyrdom of those who fell for the fatherland or chant slogans on political assassinations, the manipulation of cases or the silence of the judiciary,” said a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.
He, in this vein, insisted on “the right of Tunisians to know the truth”, recalling that “one of their first rights is the right to a fair justice rendered by judges who apply only the law.
In a video of the meeting posted on the official page of the Presidency of the Republic, President Saied emphasised the imperative to demonstrate peacefully and in compliance with the law, without any confrontation with the forces of order who are there to ensure the safety of demonstrators and protect them from infiltrators.
On the issue of the Supreme Judicial Council, he recalled “the corruption of some judges, the clientelism in the judges reshuffle and the slowdown of proceedings in several cases, including those of political assassinations.
The Supreme Judicial Council can, from this moment, be considered as belonging to the past,” he said, stating that a decree will be issued shortly.
Tunisians are commemorating on Sunday, February 6, the anniversary of the martyrdom of leftist leader Chokri Belaïd, assassinated in 2013.
Several political parties and civil society actors have called for rallies to demand the truth and that justice be done on this case and on other political assassinations.
The Ministry of Interior had recalled, Saturday afternoon, the ban on all gatherings in open or closed spaces, taken as part of measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
