Tunis:During a Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri, discussions focused on implementing energy projects designed to boost production and reduce Tunisia's energy deficit.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of achieving energy security, in line with directives from President Kais Saied. The state's energy strategy is aimed at ensuring a sustainable electricity supply, enhancing production efficiency, and strengthening the national economy's competitiveness while addressing increasing demand, climate challenges, and geopolitical fluctuations in energy markets.
Minister Slah Zouari, responsible for Public Works and Housing and also acting as Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, presented an action plan with an integrated approach to energy production. This plan includes increasing production capacity, developing renewable energy and electricity storage systems, and implementing energy-saving measures along with demand management mechanisms to balance supply and demand during peak consumption periods.
The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) detailed its short-term implementation plan, which includes several key projects such as enhancing power generation units, installing a battery energy storage system, purchasing gas engines, and integrating renewable energy projects. Notable projects include the expansion of the Sidi Daoud wind farm and the construction of photovoltaic power plants in Beni Mhira and Tataouine.
Prime Minister Zaafrani Zenzri emphasized the urgency of accelerating project implementation and called for enhanced monitoring to meet targets. She stressed the strategic importance of renewable energy, aiming for Tunisia to generate 35% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Additionally, she highlighted the necessity for electricity grid upgrades, smart meter deployment, and improved energy efficiency to achieve greater energy independence and system flexibility.
She concluded by encouraging citizen and business participation in government programs to reduce electricity consumption, especially during peak periods, to strengthen the resilience of the electricity system.
