“Protect me” programme for rural women launched

Women, Family and Childhood Affairs Minister Neziha Laabidi announced on Wednesday the launch of the programme Protect me, to facilitate rural women’s adherence to the social security system.

The project which will target over 500,000 rural women by the end of 2020, is part of the implementation of the national strategy of rural women’s economic and social empowerment between 2017 and 2020 adopted by an inner Cabinet meeting on August 11, 2017, she pointed out.

Laabidi pointed out that the project which will benefit in its 1st phase female workers in rural areas in Kairouan and north-west governorates before being generalised to other regions, seeks to facilitate the adherence of this category to the social security system to guarantee their rights, in compliance with the Tunisian legislation.

In his remarks, Social Affairs Minister Mohamed Trabelsi indicated that the project is the fruit of a joint action between the Women and Social Affairs ministries and the Tunisian Post to generalise the social welfare to all social categories, in compliance with the provisions of the law.

The minister pointed out the importance of finding mechanisms that can facilitate rural women’s adherence to the social security system, especially as 90% of active women in rural areas, notably in the agricultural sector, do not benefit from social welfare.

This programme consists in setting up a specific system to help rural women, notably women farmers, to adhere to the social security system, initiator of the project Maher Khelifi specified.

A team have been trained to support the recipients and help them enroll in the social security system through a simple digital platform easy to manipulate, he added.
