“Recent Updates on Blood Transfusion Activities,” theme of 13th Arab Forum on Transfusion Medicine (ATMF 13)

Works of the 13th Arab Forum on Transfusion Medicine (ATMF 13) kicked off Thursday in Tunis under the theme: “Recent Updates on Blood Transfusion Activities.”

The meeting aims among others to share experiences and expertise in blood transfusion between several countries including Egypt, Oman, Algeria and Libya, and to step up scientific partnerships.

The three-day forum deals with various topics related to blood transfusion and offers the possibility of training, supervision and research, and offers 50 presentations selected by a scientific committee, said forum chairman H’mida Slama.

Tunisia holds a distinguished position in blood transfusion compared to the other Arab countries, Slama pointed out, specifying that Tunisia had managed in 2017 to ensure self-sufficiency, thanks to 228 thousand blood donors.

Taking the floor, Health Minister Imed Hammami underlined that a national strategy for the development of the blood transfusion sector had been devised to ensure the control of this vital product and guarantee the safety of its transfusion, in addition to the support of training in this field, and the use of a national guide for the use of blood and its derivatives.

The National Blood Transfusion Centre (CNTS) has five regional centres and 25 blood banks spread across the regions, he specified.
