Regional Meeting for Heads of Copyright Offices in Arab Countries opens in Tunis

The Regional Meeting for Heads of Copyright Offices in Arab Countries opened Wednesday in Tunis. Minister of Cultural Affairs Mohamed Zine el Abidine

told attendees there is need to assess the effectiveness of the system in place and identify means to promote it so as to safeguard the rights of creators.

Tunisia embraced for years now a new cultural policy that rests on upholding the freedom of thought and creation as well as a real cultural democracy and narrowing the distance between citizens and cultural creation across the country. All stakeholders are now facing fresh challenges in Tunisia, particularly the need to develop the system designed to protect the interests of creators.

Director-General of the Tunisian Organisation for Copyright and Related Rights (OTDAV) Youssef Ben Brahim underscored the key importance of this meeting that seeks to increase the exchange of experiences and expertise among copyright offices in the Arab world.

Deputy Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Sylvie Forbin said the meeting offers the opportunity to identify cooperation opportunities between the WIPO and Arab countries in such areas as the use of cutting-edge technology in managing copyright and related rights mechanisms.

Heads of copyright offices in seventeen Arab countries (Tunisia, Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Qatar and Yemen) as well as representatives of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) and the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) are taking part in this meeting held by the WIPO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the OTDAV.
