Religious Affairs Minister meets with Representative of OHCHR office in Tunisia

Religious Affairs Minister Brahim Chaïbi met, Monday in Tunis, Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Élodie Cantier-Aristide who was accompanied by the head of human rights in the same office Samia Kamoun.

The minister stressed Tunisia’s adherence to the universal values ​​of human rights, which go hand in hand with the teachings of Islam, adding that freedom of expression and opinion are inalienable and guaranteed by the law, reads a statement of the ministry.

Chaïbi expressed his department’s readiness to collaborate with the OHCHR so as to anchor these values among religious leaders, modernise the religious discourse and bring it closer to the reality and expectations of the people.

Cantier-Aristide spoke of the creation of a hotline which would receive complaints submitted by religious executives. She also spoke of the creation of a listening and survey unit for attacks and threats against them.

The UN official expressed readiness to continue working with the Religious Affairs Ministry so as to develop future programmes that meet the needs of the department.
