KOFORIDUA: Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, has announced the resurgence of a variant type 2 poliovirus, prompting a vaccination campaign targeting children under five years of age in the Eastern Region. The vaccination effort will consist of two rounds using the Novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (noPV2), previously employed to address a similar outbreak in 2022. According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Health Service was alerted on September 6, 2024, about a confirmed circulating variant type 2 poliovirus detected at the Koforidua Environmental Surveillance site. The variant was genetically linked to a strain found in Algeria, underscoring the global nature of poliovirus threats. The campaign aims to close immunity gaps and prevent the persistence of poliovirus within the region. The first round of vaccinations is scheduled for October 17-20, 2024, followed by a second round on November 14-17, 2024. Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasized the importance of environmental survei llance, routine immunization, and risk communication in combating polio. The campaign will target more than six and a half million children nationwide, utilizing house-to-house visits and mobile teams to reach schools and communities. In anticipation of the campaign, Ghana Health Service workers organized a float in Koforidua to increase awareness and build trust in the vaccination effort. The campaign is supported by development partners, including the World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, and Rotary International.
