Accra: The European Union Delegation to Ghana, in collaboration with the Netherlands and French Embassies, successfully hosted the inaugural "Ride with Team Europe" cycling event in Accra last Saturday. The event featured a 12.6km bike ride aimed at advocating for cycling as a viable mode of transportation and lifestyle choice in Ghana. Over 150 participants cycled from Black Stars Square to the ministries, with a notable stop at the Netherlands Embassy, before concluding at the Alliance Française. According to Ghana News Agency, the event not only included the cycling activity but also featured a sustainable fashion show, an art exhibition, and a picnic with a sustainable food market. Mr. Jeroen Verheul, the Netherlands Ambassador, in his keynote address, emphasized the multiple benefits of cycling, including health, environmental sustainability, and convenience. He highlighted the cultural differences in perception towards cycling between Ghana and the Netherlands and urged for a change in mindset towards biking in Ghana. Mr. Verheul pointed out the challenges cyclists face in Accra, such as safety and security, and the societal stigma associated with cycling. He advocated for greater respect and infrastructure to support cyclists, noting the stark contrast in cycling culture between Ghana and the Netherlands, where even the Prime Minister cycles to work. Mr. Jules Armand Aniambossou, France's Ambassador to Ghana, praised the participants and encouraged them to continue serving as role models for sustainable transportation. Mr. Irchad Razaaly, Head of Delegation at the EU Embassy, spoke about the logistical challenges due to the volume of vehicles on the roads but remained optimistic about promoting cycling as a sustainable transit option in Accra. Mr. Abdallai Abubakar, Deputy Director at the Environmental Protection Agency, stressed the environmental benefits of cycling, noting its zero emissions and the positive impact it could have on urban mobility and environmental conservation. The "Ride with Team Eu rope" event marks an important step towards raising awareness and fostering a more bike-friendly culture in Accra, aligning with broader environmental sustainability goals.
