Saied calls for streamlining public spending

President Kais Saied, on Monday, called to reassure Tunisians on the current situation, while streamlining public spending.

At a meeting with Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), Marouane Abassi held at the Palace of Carthage, the President said “economic and social decisions must emanate from a reading of our reality,» adding «it is imperative to rely, above all, on ourselves.»

President added that “international cooperation must serve the needs of Tunisia and be established within the framework of our national choices.”

Speaking after the meeting, the Governor of the BCT said the latter focused on the financial situation in the last two months of 2021 and the finance laws of 2021 and 2022.

The meeting also discussed the internal financing of the budget, he pointed out, recognising that the current situation “is not easy” but can be overcome in the best conditions and through the combined efforts of all stakeholders.

Abassi said official negotiations with international institutions will resume very soon, noting that some countries have already expressed their willingness to help Tunisia to complete its 2021 budget.

The governor of the BCT estimated that the economic situation should improve in the next period, especially in some sectors such as tourism, mining and exports, adding that olive oil production will rise to 200,000 tonnes.
