Saïed underlines need to respect citizens’ right to peaceful protest and free expression

President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed on Thursday received Acting Interior Minister Ridha Gharsallaoui along with National Security Director General Sami Hichri and Public Security Director General Mourad Hassine.

The Head of State “gave his instructions to manage the protests in compliance with the law while respecting the right of citizens to demonstrate peacefully and express themselves freely,” a Presidency of the Republic press release reads.

Saïed underlined in this regard, “the need to adopt a new approach to respect the foundations of the rule of law, enshrine the principles of republican security, enforce order, protect citizens and their property and guarantee the enjoyment of their rights.”

Parties and civil society organisations expressed their rejection of police violence against young people, journalists and lawyers during a peaceful protest in the capital on Wednesday to demand the truth about political killings.

The Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) decried the use of violence against journalists who had been there to cover the protest.
