The Scientific Committee to combat the coronavirus proposed at a meeting of the National Authority to combat the coronavirus Tuesday a full lockdown of a period no less than 6 weeks to break the chain of infection, said spokesperson for the Health Ministry Nissaf Ben Alaya.
The ministers members of the national committee to combat the coronavirus said it was impossible to apply this proposal for economic and social considerations.
The proposal of the scientific committee to impose a full lockdown was decided based on experiences of other countries that saw such waves of the disease, Ben Alaya pointed out.
The ministers pointed to the difficult economic and social situation as well as the psychological situation of citizens, which prevents such measures to be taken for a similar period, Ben Alaya added.
Participants emphasised the need to apply preventive measures properly, recommending imposing the curfew nationwide from 8 pm to 5 am starting July 1.
The curfew aims to reduce gatherings and parties, Ben Alaya indicated, recalling that the committee has also decided to increase mobile vaccination campaigns.
The government is committed to imposing these decisions more firmly, she added.
Ben Alaya urged incoming passengers to carry out a PCR test before arriving to Tunisia and to seek to get the vaccine in their country of residence.
She also warned against COVID-19 variants, including the Delta one, deeming them “very dangerous.”
Governors will impose a full lockdown in delegations and governorates where COVID-19 cases exceed 400 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants, she recalled.
