Second phase of societal dialogue on health sector reform starts

Health Minister Samira Merai announced Tuesday the start of the second phase of the societal dialogue on national health policies, strategies and plans in Tunisia.

“This second phase aims essentially at implementing the recommendations provided for in the “white paper” crowning the first phase of the dialogue conducted with the support of the International Health Organisation and the European Union,” added Merai at a conference held in Tunis.

This phase, she said, will help set the objectives of the reform in conformity with the citizens’ priorities and needs, while respecting the specificities and requirements of each region.

“Currently, the health situation in Tunisia requires the establishment of a societal dialogue based on a patient-centred approach,” Merai specified.

The objective is to improve relations with the citizen, ensure continuity of care, set up mechanisms capable of respecting the ethics of the profession and to establish the sector’s good governance.

According to the minister, this dialogue launched in October 2012, represents a “qualitative leap” in Tunisia and will contribute to devising a roadmap to develop the health system in the medium and long term.

Representative of the European Union Laurent Le Dois pointed out that Tunisia’s participatory approach to health sector reform has contributed to improvements in health services.
