Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs meets with African parliament delegation

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Sabri Bachtobji met on Wednesday in Tunis with a delegation from the African Parliament.

The African parliamentary delegation is visiting Tunis from 3 to 7 July as part of the consultations with a view to the adoption of the protocol of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the rights of women in Africa “Maputo Protocol” and the process of its integration into the Tunisian law.

The members of the delegation commended the efforts made by the Government and the House of People’s Representatives to develop national legislation on the protection of women, particularly in rural areas, and the consolidation of their rights, a Foreign Ministry statement indicates.

The Secretary of State reiterated Tunisia’s commitment to join the international and regional mechanisms in the field of women’s rights as part of the concern to preserve the rights and achievements of Tunisian women and develop legislation in this field.

The Maputo Protocol complements the Charter of the African Union (AU), with a specific focus on women’s rights in Africa. It defends women’s rights, particularly in the fight against gender-based violence, gender equality and reproductive health, and lays down a number of human rights including food, health, education, dignity and peace.
