SEMINAR ON SECURITY IN AFRICA EMPHASIZE NEED FOR GLOBAL, MULTI-DIMENSIONAL STRATEGY

ORAN, ALGERIA, Participants of the 4th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa taking place here have emphasized the need to adopt a global multi-dimensional approach to deal with the security threat in Africa, while underlining the importance of strengthening co0operation between the African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) in these efforts, says AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui.

He told APS on the sidelines of the seminar that seminar had been marked by discussions which underscored the need to deal with peace and security issues through a comprehensive approach, especially because it was not sufficient to tackle the issues as purely security and military matters.

It is essential to integrate the aspects related to the economy, development, the establishment of democracy and to the respect of all the components of African societies so as to build national economies and contribute the development, he added.

He pointed out that the best way to deal with the areas of tension is the prevention in its multiple dimensions, notably those relating to human rights and early warning mechanisms and others.

He added that the participants presented the approaches taken by the African Union, the Arab League and the European Union relating to this issue.

The participants broached the issue relating to security and peace in Africa and the response to the security threat in order to silence the guns on the continent by 2020, added Chergui.
