Sfax: dismantling of SIAPE polluting units starts

The Tunisian chemical group (GCT) started on Tuesday afternoon works to dismantle the polluting units of the SIAPE plant (industrial company of phosphoric acid and fertilizer).

These works are part of the implementation of the decision announced by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed during his visit last April 20 and 21 in Sfax.

According to SIAPE Director Habib Elloumi, starting the works on the eve of the planned visit of the Prime Minister in the region Wednesday is just a coincidence.

He said that the dismantling operation will only affect the sulfuric acid production units and not the TSP (triple super phosphate), whose emissions of gases are not polluting and comply with the standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

A call for tenders will be launched in mid-2018 to continue the decommissioning programme, which also concerns the phosphoric acid production unit and the rehabilitation of the site, while remaining the property of the State, he added in a statement to the press. Credits of about 75 million dinars will be allocated to the rehabilitation programme, which includes the construction of a technology centre, a training centre and a sports centre.
