Sfax hosts International Youth Tourism Forum

“The youth hostel, our home” is the motto of the International Youth Tourism Forum to be organised next Thursday in Sfax by the Tunisian Association of Youth Hostels and Tourism (French : ATATJ), with the participation of the International Youth Hostel Federation (FIAJ), represented by its Executive Director, as well as several local and international experts in the field of youth business and tourism.

ATATJ President Moncef Ben Mansour told a press conference on Saturday that the forum will address several themes and issues related to quality promotion and programs to develop services provided by the hostels as well as networking and online booking in 5,000 hostels around the world including Tunisia.

This meeting will also be an opportunity to discuss the strategic plan of youth tourism in Tunisia (2018-2023) and the prospects of developing this activity, in line with the approach adopted by the International Union of Youth Hostels and to enhance the role of these spaces in the rapprochement of civilisations and cultures.

Created in 1962, ATATJ wants to be “an active player in the attraction of young people and the training of their personalities,” said Ben Mansour, adding that the association will work to make the governorate of Sfax one of the most important Tunisian sites of youth tourism.

According to the official, the ministry is currently working on the development of a national map of youth centres and mobile animation units as well as youth hostels, youth tourism and permanent rural youth and mobile clubs in order to promote an overall restructuring of this activity.

For his part, Forum coordinator Mohamed Meguedich announced the establishment of a regional remote reservation centre within the Regional Office of ATATJ of Sfax, indicating that this centre will allow young people to book in any hostel, in one of the 65 member countries of the FIAJ.

Meguedich said that the reservation document is recognized by several embassies and official consulates.

The president of the Regional Authority of Youth Hostel and Tourism, Ezzeddine Zouch, described this forum as “distinguished”, insofar as it presents the governorate of Sfax as an important site in the promotion of youth tourism on the national and international scale.

ATATJ is a non-profit organisation. It has joined FIAJ since its creation.
