Shaheed pays tribute to Tunisia for its openness to UN human rights mechanisms

State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Sabri Bachtobji met Thursday with UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief Ahmed Shaheed, who was on a visit to Tunisia, April 9-19, at the invitation of the Tunisian government.

On this occasion, Shaheed paid tribute to Tunisia for its openness to the UN human rights mechanisms and for the important reforms it has undertaken in matters of enshrining women’s rights.

According to him, “Tunisia has taken the right path to consolidate the democratic process and to entrench the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 2014 Constitution which represents a progressive reference and a model to follow, especially Article 6 which guarantees freedom of belief, conscience and worship.”

The UN official also welcomed the creation of a Commission on Individual Freedoms and Equality (COLIBE) which, he estimated, will undoubtedly contribute to reinforce rights, in compliance with the new Tunisian Constitution and international human rights standards.

Created on August 13, 2017, at the initiative of President Beji Caid Essebsi, the Commission was tasked with preparing a report on legislative reforms relating to individual freedoms and equality, in compliance with the 2014 Tunisian Constitution and international human rights standards.

For his part, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to move forward on the path of reform, in order to provide all the guarantees necessary for the exercise of rights and freedoms and to consecrate them in real life on the basis of the principles of citizenship and abidance by law.
