Sidi Bouzid’s security operation: two killed terrorists belonged to Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade (National Guard)

The security operation that began on Sunday at noon in Sidi Bouzid ended at 4 p.m., with the death of two terrorists and the arrest of four others, a security source told TAP correspondent in the region.

National Guard units raided a flat on the second floor of a building in the Ouled Chelbi neighbourhood, at the southern entrance to the town of Sidi Bouzid, where a terrorist group hided.

Clashes took place between the National Guards and the terrorist elements.

In a statement to TAP on Sunday evening, Colonel-Major Khalifa Chibani, official spokesman for the National Guard, said National Guard units were closely monitoring the movements of terrorist elements holed up in Mount Salloum and Mount Chaambi, in the governorate of Kasserine. They were “in connection with individuals from the town of Sidi Bouzid”, he said.

Once the preparations had been completed and all arrangements had been made, National Guard units had carried out a pro-active operation in a Sidi Bouzid neighbourhood during which two “dangerous” terrorists, leaders of the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade were killed.

One of them is the emir of the Brigade. He would be foreign national, he said.

Colonel-Major Khalifa Chibani added that the element (the emir of the Brigade), who was wearing an explosive belt, was hit in the clashes with the National Guard units.

“He then detonated his suicide belt and blew himself up when the security forces tried to capture him alive,” he said, noting that no injuries were reported among National Guards.

He also said that the clashes with the second terrorist continued for about an hour before he was shot. He was also wearing an explosive belt.

Four other terrorist elements in connection with this group were arrested during the operation, Colonel Major Khalifa Chibani said, adding that National Guard units are continuing sweeping operations and raids in the region of Sidi Bouzid.

This terrorist group took advantage of the latest social protests to leave their hiding place in Mount Chaambi and plan terrorist operations during the Holy month of Ramadan, he pointed out.
