SITIC AFRICA 2018: Making Tunisia hub for Africa in digital sector

“The international exhibition of information and communication technologies dedicated to Africa (SITIC AFRICA 2018) is an opportunity to make Tunisia a hub for Africa in the digital sector,” said Minister of Communication Technology and Digital Economy Anouar Maarouf.

Chairing the opening, on Tuesday, of the 3rd edition of SITIC AFRICA 2018 to be held from April 10 to 12, 2018, at the Exhibition Center of El Kram in Tunis, at the initiative of the Tunisie Afrique Export Company and the Professional Association Tunisian Banks and Financial Institutions (French: APTBEF), the minister added that the digital can be a real locomotive in Tunisia to develop the Tunisian economy, especially since this sector has maintained a steady pace of growth and created employment, despite a difficult national economic juncture.

Besides, the minister stressed the importance for African countries to work together to promote their potential, believing that they could constitute a “unified digital market for these countries”.

He recalled that the Startup Act adopted recently by the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) aimed at boosting the ecosystem of Tunisian startups is “a new way not only for Tunisians but for all those who want to innovate from Tunisia “.

In turn, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Development, Digital Economy and Posts, Hadja Ouattara Sanon, said Tunisia is a benchmark for digital technology for African countries, especially in the area of cyber security.

She added that SITIC Africa 2018 is an opportunity for the delegation of 70 Burkinabe businessmen to draw on Tunisian know-how in the digital sector.

APTBEF President Ahmed Karam underlined that this event will help us to reflect together on the adoption of new procedures to support new information and communication technologies.

He added that 40% of tools in the banking sector will be transformed, knowing that, already, robots are installed in the windows.

He emphasised, on this occasion, the need for modern information systems to have banks in tune.

The 250 representatives of African delegations, present at the fair are from from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Benin confirmed, on this occasion, that this event represents a platform for direct meetings between the economic actors of the different countries, to boost bilateral relations, especially since Tunisia has an infrastructure favorable to investment and positioning that allows it to be the gateway to Africa in the digital world.

“SITIC AFRICA 2018” is an international event that serves to raise awareness of Tunisia’s information and communication technology (ICT) offer to Tunisian Small Medium Entreprises (SMEs) and Small Medium Industries (SMIs), while being a platform for the international partnership involving Africa, the Arab world, the developed countries and Tunisia, according to the organisers.

It brings together ICT pioneers, African business leaders, IT professionals, policy makers who come to share their experiences and are looking for new opportunities for cooperation in this area.

The fair is also marked by the participation of representatives of Jordan, Algeria, Canada, China and Russia.

Two cooperation agreements were concluded on the occasion of the holding of the “SITIC AFRICA 2018”.

The first agreement was signed between Minister of Communication Technologies and the Digital Economy, Anouar Maarouf and Burkinabe Minister of Development of Digital Economy and Posts, Hadja Ouattara Sanon.

The second agreement was signed between Minister of Communication Technologies and the Digital Economy, Anouar Maarouf and Malian Minister of Digital Economy and Communication, Arouna Modibo Toure.

The objective of these two conventions is to strengthen cooperation in the digital field, while allowing economic entities in both countries to use the techniques and expertise they have to develop the digital landscape in their countries, create an African market unified and offer high value-added employment opportunities.
