SNCFT suffers major losses due to sit-ins, closure of Sfax/Tozeur railway line

The closing of railway line No. 13 between Sfax and Tozeur due to sit-ins has caused major financial losses for the Tunisian Railway Company (French: SNCFT) in the past seven years.

It has led to the cancellation of some 8,960 phosphate delivery operations, the company said on Tuesday without providing further details on the amount of the losses.

Some 865 sit-ins were recorded by the company with an average 10 days per sit-in, the SNCFT added in a press release.

Protests often result in the closing of this railway line and other lines serving the mining basin and blocking train traffic from Sfax to other southwestern cities in both directions, the company pointed out.

Railway line No. 13, an important line for transporting individuals and phosphates, remains closed due to sit-ins despite several attempts to restore the situation, the same source added, calling for further efforts from the concerned authorities to unblock the current situation and resume the activities of the Sfax/Tozeur line as soon as possible.
