The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) firmly decried the “terrible attack” against two Tunisian TV teams and most of journalists and photojournalists who had been covering Sunday’s protest.

Journalists and photojournalists who were covering Sunday’s protest at the Habib Bourguiba Avenue downtown Tunis, were the victims of a “terrible attack” by protestors opposing the exceptional measures announced on July 25 by President Kais Saied, an SNJT press release reads.

A protest was staged on Sunday against Saied’s exceptional measures with slogans condemning the decision to freeze the activities of the House of People’s Representatives (ARP).

The SNJT further condemned “some political parties who keep involving journalists in fights they have nothing to do with.” The rally’s organisers are “legally and politically responsible for the attacks,” the SNJT said.

To this end, the union called on the Public Prosecutor’s Office to “take swift action against the attackers,” recalling that the SNJT’s legal team are available for the journalists and photojournalists who are victims of violence.

Protestors with water bottles and rocks targeted the Al Watania TV team who had been covering the protest, the SNJT specified.
