SNJT urges public prosecution to prosecute Farid El Beji for his remarks against Radio columnist Heythem Mekki

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) urged the public prosecutor to act immediately by prosecuting Nidaa Tounes leader Farid El Beji for “an act criminalised by the law and constituting a danger to the lives of persons, their physical integrity and their human dignity “.

“Farid El Beji, who claims to be Sheikh and a religious man, has accused journalist Heythem Mekki of being a Muslim stirring up trouble and banditry in an interview last Monday at the Watan site, the SNJT said in a statement issued Wednesday to justify its request to prosecute.

The union denounces in its statement “a provocative discourse whose purpose can be a motivation to attack his person on the basis of his positions posted as radio columnist Mosaique FM.”

The SNJT asked Farid El Beji to apologize and “stop issuing such statements given their seriousness”.
