Social priorities of Arab countries under debate in Gammarth

The Arab Ministerial Conference on “integration of the social dimensions of the 2030 sustainable development plan into the social policies of the Arab States” started on Monday in Gammarth.

Participants in the two-day conference held by the Ministry of Social Affairs, in partnership with the technical secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, discussed the social dimensions of the 2030 sustainable development plan and presented some experiences of Arab countries in integrating social dimensions into their development policies and plans.

In his remarks, Mohamed Trabelsi, Minister of Social Affairs emphasised the importance of the social and solidarity economy as an effective management mechanism for the economic and social integration of vulnerable groups in order to combat poverty and promote local development, employment and integration of the informal sector in the formal economy.

He noted that Tunisia will host an Arab conference on the social and solidarity economy as a mechanism to combat precarious work and promote social integration in Arab countries in 2018.

For his part, Abdellatif Abid, deputy secretary general of the League of Arab States, president of the Tunis centre, said that the implementation of the 2030 sustainable development plan is a priority of the Arab joint action to achieve the development of Arab populations despite terrorist attacks, Israeli practices against the Palestinian people and armed conflict in some countries.

The implementation of the 2030 sustainable development plan requires continued efforts to integrate vulnerable groups in society, including people with disabilities and the elderly,” he pointed out.

Abid also said achieving these goals requires the development of databases to be able to implement effective and achievable strategies noting, however, the difficulty of designing these databases in conflict-affected areas.

Hind Sabih Barrak Al Sabih, President of the 37th Session of the Council of Ministers of Arab Social Affairs and Minister of Social Affairs and Labour in Kuwait said the holding of the conference reflects the commitment of Arab countries to the achievement of development and ensuring a dignified life for all populations in the region.

On the agenda of the conference are several papers on the objectives and the strategies adopted to fight against poverty, the priorities of the Arab countries in the social field (women, family and childhood) and their integration in the development plans and in the social policies.
