Social protests and rains block again phosphate production

The production of phosphates by the Gafsa Phosphate Company (GPC) has stopped since last Tuesday, due to protests by job seekers after the announcement of the first tranche of the recruitment of employees and rainfall recorded in the region, according to Nidaa Tounes MP of the House of Peoples Representatives (HPR) Asma Abu Hana.

The rains that affected several areas of Gafsa governorate caused the flooding of wadi Thalja and damaged the railway line that transports phosphate from Redaif, Metlaoui and Om Laarayes, she said at a hearing session of Minister of Industry, Mines, Energy and Renewable Energy by the House’s Committee on Energy and Industry.

The financial losses of the Chemical Group, the CPG and the Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) due to the cessation of production, reached respectively, 1050 MD, 350 MD and 30 MD Indystry Minister Khaled Ben Gaddour said in turn.

The minister called on the deputies to adopt the emergency economic bill, noting that the implementation of the phosphate mining projects in Sraouirtene (El Kef), Tozeur and Nafta requires significant funds, stating that the exploitation of the only mine of Sraouirtene requires the mobilisation of 3.000 MD.

The ministry endeavours to increase phosphate production to 6.5 million tonnes by the end of 2018 from 4.5 million tonnes planned for 2017, noting that the CPG has the means to produce 8 million tonnes, the same amount recorded in 2010.
