Social security: major challenge is acceleration of reform (Ennaceur)

The major challenge facing the social security system is the acceleration of the reform which remains a shared national responsibility, Mohamed Ennaceur, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) said on Monday.

Speaking at the opening of a national conference on the reform of social security in Tunisia, organised in Tunis by the Tunisian Association of Social Law and Industrial Relations, Ennaceur said the acceleration of the reform of social security aims essentially at preserving the financial balances of social funds and improving their profitability.

The reform also aims to establish a comprehensive and sustainable social security system guaranteeing a minimum pension and health coverage, he also indicated, adding that reform requires good governance in the management of social funds.

The reform must be based on a participatory approach and can succeed only in the context of a new social contract between the different social actors, he said.

Ennaceur noted that the reform of social security in Tunisia also requires a diagnosis of the current crisis facing social funds, indicating that a significant number of citizens remain deprived of this coverage.

The HPR Speaker pointed out that today’s meeting opens up the prospects for a comprehensive national dialogue open to all political, economic and social forces.
