Some 400 thousand files archived in poverty register, says Mohamed Trabelsi

The national census programme related to the poverty register in the country recorded a progress after archiving some 400 thousand cases out of 900 thousand, Social Affairs Minister Mohamed Trabelsi said on Monday.

Addressing the Arab Ministerial Conference on the “integration of social dimensions of the 2030 sustainable development plan into the social policies of Arab States,” November 27-28 in Gammarth, Trabelsi pointed out that efforts are exerted to finalise this register as soon as possible.

The goal is to ensure a better management of social programmes for needy people and to implement a national multidisciplinary poverty map based on accurate data, he indicated.

A national authority to combat poverty or a national commission will be set up to supervise the implementation of the national anti-poverty strategy, he added.

The government is attached to achieve an in-depth reform in social assistance programmes with a view to developing them, ensuring a better governance of mechanisms and set up a legal and institutional framework, the minister indicated.

These mechanisms, he pointed out, are based on objective standards to measure the poverty rate so as to benefit from assistance programmes with the creation of a data bank on some 900 thousand needy families.
