Accra: Muslims and Christians in Ghana have been called upon to form a united religious pressure group to oversee governmental activities and curb any excesses. Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, made this appeal during the fourth annual National Muslims Conference of Ghana, emphasizing the importance of a collective voice to speak truth to power without bias. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Bagbin highlighted that political parties alone are insufficient to safeguard Ghana's democratic experiment. He stressed the significance of interest groups, such as the National Muslims Conference of Ghana (NMCG), the Catholic Bishops Conference, and the Christian Council of Ghana, in influencing policies and legislation. The NMCG, led by the Muslim Caucus of Parliament, serves as a representative body for all Ghanaian Muslims, addressing governance and developmental issues including education, health, and economic empowerment. The Speaker praised the strategic repositioning efforts of th e Muslim community in Ghana, urging them to maintain ownership of the Conference to effectively influence government policies and legislation. He also called for unity and peace among Ghanaians, especially as elections approach, advocating for mutual respect and tolerance. Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, Chief Justice of Ghana, commended the NMCG for its role in fostering peace and security. She lauded the conference's theme, which emphasizes bridging healthcare delivery gaps, and acknowledged the NMCG's exemplary role for Muslims and interfaith relations. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, noted the NMCG's critical role in addressing Muslim concerns and influencing government policy. He assured that the NMCG is a crucial partner in enhancing diplomatic ties and attracting investment for economic development. Mr. Yusif Jajah, Leader of the Muslim Caucus in Parliament, emphasized the significance of the Muslim community in national development. He highlighted their contributions to various sec tors and the need to leverage collective strength for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
