STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDING OFFICERS OF PARLIAMENT ON THE JOHANNESBURG BUILDING FIRE TRAGEDY

The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by National Assembly Speaker, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and National Council of Provinces Chairperson, Mr Amos Masondo express their deepest condolences to the families of the more than 70 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the devastating building fire in Johannesburg. Our hearts go out to the affected families during this time of immense sorrow.

Parliament mourns alongside the families of the victims, sharing their grief and pain during this distressing period. We commend the remarkable bravery displayed by the firefighters who selflessly battled the flames, working tirelessly to contain the situation and save lives.

In the wake of this tragedy, we urge the relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the cause of the fire. It is crucial that a thorough investigation be carried out to ascertain the root cause, in order to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents from occurring again in the future.

Said the Presiding Officers: “South Africans are called upon to come together in solidarity and offer assistance to those affected by this catastrophic event. Every loss suffered is a profound tragedy, and we must collectively work towards creating a safer environment for all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this trying time.”
