STMA Launches On-Street Market Initiative

Accra: The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has introduced an on-street market, which commenced on October 18, 2025. The initiative sees certain road stretches, including Ahenfie Hotel, Port Quarters, Baptist, and Zenith, being utilized for market activities every Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to Ghana News Agency, the assembly has urged both consumers and traders to adhere to all instructions associated with the market days to ensure the smooth operation and success of the on-street market. The initiative aims to create a vibrant commercial environment on weekends.

However, some market women, consumers, and members of the public have expressed concerns regarding the introduction of the on-street market. They have urged the government to expedite the work on the existing market project or make it temporarily suitable for traders. Madam Emelia Mensah, a teacher, questioned why the market at the Paa Grant Roundabout remains unused, suggesting that it should be occupied instead.

Mr. Nurudeen, another resident, expressed concerns about potential environmental issues, fearing the streets might become littered. He cited a previous incident at Jubilee Park during the COVID-19 period as an example of rushed decisions leading to negative outcomes, urging the assembly to reconsider their approach.
