The Criminal Chamber specialised in terrorist cases handed sentences in the case relating to Ben Guerdane events which involves 96 defendants.
The Tunis Court of First Instance said Saturday the sentences are as follows:
– Capital punishment for 16 defendants
– Life sentence for 15 defendants
–30 years in prison for 2 defendants
– 27- year-sentences for 2 defendants
– 24 years in prison for 7 defendants
– 20 years in prison for 3 defendants
– four to fifteen years in prison for the remaining defendants
– Dismissal of proceedings for some defendants (the number was not specified).
The public prosecutor’s office appealed all sentences in this case.
A violent terrorist attack took place in Ben Guerdane, governorate of Médenine, on March 2- 10, 2016. Terrorist groups sought to take control of the city. A decisive battle which involved armed forces and terrorists occurred on March 7.
Twelve staff members of armed forces and seven civilians were killed in the clashes; 36 terrorists were eliminated.
Twenty-seven sustained injuries among the armed forces and civilians and several armed terrorists were arrested.
