Terrorist threats still persist (minister)

Terrorist threats still persist in heights on the border with Algeria, National Defence Minister Abdelkrim Zbidi Monday said.

These are serious threats insofar as terrorists holed up in mountains in the governorates of Kasserine, El Kef and Jendouba continue, based on intelligence, to plan attacks targeting military facilities and units as well as strategic sites.

These planned attacks come as a response to the setbacks suffered by terrorists after the recent military offensives, the Minister said.

Zbidi told a Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee hearing threats also target the country’s south eastern border as a result of the deteriorating political and security situation in Libya.

“Tunisia is not immune from these threats and unexpected actions are probable in spite of measures taken by security and military institutions and coordination with internal security forces, ” Zbidi highlighted.

Terrorists, whether Tunisian or foreign nationals, keep on getting into the country to carry out terrorist operations or join groups in western heights. They also seek to obtain supplies from locals in Mghilla and Salloum mountains for lack of logistical support.

The arrest last January 6 in Kasserine of “dangerous terrorist” Borhane Boulabi helped obtain important information about the terrorist groups he joined, the Minister added.

Early in January, the Intelligence and Security Agency coming under the National Defence Ministry provided intelligence about an Algerian terrorist sneaking into Tunisia. He was later apprehended and the whole network dismantled.
