The Republican Party (Al-Joumhouri) expressed concern over the ongoing political crisis in Tunisia and the concentration of all powers in the hands of the President of the Republic, hence opposing the foundations of democracies which are distribution and balance between powers.
In a statement released after its committee meeting Sunday, the party criticised maintaining the state of emergency without any time limit, in accordance with the Presidential Decree No. 117 under which the application of the provisions of the Constitution is suspended and the President of the Republic has endless powers protecting his decrees from any possible challenge before the administrative court.
All economic figures reveal the country’s fragile public finance situation and the difficulty to mobilise resources to address the imbalance of the 2021 State budget, the party said.
It also shows the difficulty to identify its criteria for the upcoming year “as negotiations with international financial institutions have been interrupted and the country’s diplomatic isolation exacerbated by the lack of any government programmes or vision to overcome the current situation.”
According to Al-Joumhouri, reforming the judicial system must be part of a societal dialogue far from any attempt to control it by the executive.
On the other hand, it urged all stakeholders as well as democratic and progressive civil society activists to join efforts so that they impose a return to legitimacy and constitutional order by holding a national dialogue.
