“There is room for all citizens in Tunisia, provided that everyone does his or her self-criticism,” says Taboubi

There is room for all citizens in Tunisia provided that each one does his or her self-criticism and endeavours to put the country’s interest above any other consideration, said Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Secretary General Noureddine Tabboubi.

Speaking early on Saturday morning following his re-election for a second term as UGTT S-G at the end of the 25th Ordinary Congress held February 16-18 in Sfax, Tabboubi affirmed that Tunisia needs all its citizens.

Answering a question on the criticism targeting the President of the Republic because of his unilateral decisions in policy-making despite the union’s repeated calls for dialogue with the various parties, the union leader underlined that the UGTT has constants that it will not give up whatever is the situation.

The UGTT, which has a long history of activism through its participation in the national liberation movement and a sharp sense of patriotism, will succeed, he said, in finding Tunisian solutions to overcome this very difficult stage, indicating that the union will be required to balance its national and social role in an approach that ensures interaction between the political and socio-economic aspects.

Taboubbi pointed out that in its internal motion, the Congress had decided to instruct the Executive Committee to convene an extraordinary national council to examine the general orientations in the political and socio-economic fields in the country.

He stressed the need for “all parties to see reason and to understand that it is a question of the country’s supreme interest and not of a narrow partisan one.”
