Thirteen attacks against journalists and photojournalists were reported in May, up from the previous month, indicates the latest report by the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT).
The latter reiterates call on the Interior Ministry to “seriously investigate the abusive detentions of journalists and the pre-checking of media content.”
The SNJT urges the Ministry to remind its officers to respect the freedom of the press and to intervene to protect journalists and photojournalists in case of danger.
Besides, the Union points out the danger of bringing journalists to justice under the anti-terrorism law “which is a threat to the freedom of press and expression,” calling on the Supreme Council of the Judiciary to draw the attention of judges to the seriousness of this issue.
It further urges national organisations to stand in solidarity with journalists and photojournalists and to endeavour for devising a national strategy, that protects them from all forms of violence, especially gender-based violence.
