In a statement to media, Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Jorge Marcelo Faurie said he had discussed with his Tunisian counterpart the evolution of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and ways to identify new opportunities for cooperation to boost economic growth and generate new jobs.

“Argentina and Tunisia have a particular interest in digital technology,” he said, noting that Argentina can offer Tunisia significant opportunities, particularly in the trade sector, in sciencitific areas related to agriculture as well as in the field of health.

He also said that he and his Tunisian counterpart have defined a number of cooperation projects to be concluded by next September.

According to Faurie, the meeting also examined ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on the bilateral and multilateral level, especially as Argentina has developed relations with countries in sub-Saharan Africa and launched projects in the region in some countries in this region.

He also noted Argentina’s interest in Tunisia’s participation in the G20 Summit scheduled for November 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For his part, Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui said that the meeting made it possible to discuss opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and to review working papers to be signed by the end of the year 2018.

In this regard, Jhianoui emphasised the common commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation on trade, identify ways to promote the flow of Tunisian exports into the Argentine market and facilitate the export of goods from both countries in other markets.

According to Jhinaoui, a Tunisian-Argentine team will be set up to examine the possibility of developing bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture, agricultural industries, scientific research and livestock breeding.

First since 10 years, the visit of an Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs in Tunisia is an opportunity to develop relations of friendship and cooperation with Argentina and to broaden the base of Tunisia’s economic partners in Latin America, particularly with the member countries of the Southern Common Market Group (Mercosur).

Tunisia had begun direct negotiations with MERCOSUR to conclude a free trade agreement with this promising market.
