TICAD8: Japanese Hideyo Noguchi Prize awarded to two South African researchers and Carter Centre programme

Director of the Carter Centre’s Guinea Worm Eradication Programme Adam Weiss and two researchers at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa(CAPRISA) Salim S. Abdool Karim and his teammate Quarraicha Abdool Karim received, on Sunday in Tunis, the Japanese Hideyo Nogushi Africa Prize on the sidelines of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8), said organisers of the conference.
The Japanese Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize comprises two categories, the first one rewards medical services and went to director of the Programme for the Eradication of Guinea Worm (Dracunculiasis), a parasitic disease prevailing in some African countries, particularly in South Sudan.
The second category of the prize was granted to two South African epidemiologists. It also rewards medical research.
The award ceremony was held under the chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi and his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi.
