Tiler Jailed Two Years for Escaping Lawful Custody

Asante Akropong: A 25-year-old tiler, Akwasi Kuffour, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for escaping from lawful custody. Kuffour pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, who prosecuted the case, informed the court presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu that the complainant was a police officer stationed at Abuakwa, near Akropong. In 2023, Kuffour was arraigned before the Akropong District Court on charges that included assaulting a public officer, resisting arrest, and causing damage. He was subsequently remanded into prison custody.

However, while exiting the Magistrate's chamber, Kuffour managed to escape and went into hiding. The prosecution noted that Kuffour was rearrested in April 2024 at Kumasi-Tanoso on a separate allegation of stealing a mobile phone. During his caution statement, he admitted to escaping from lawful custody.

Following further investigations, Kuffour was charged and brought before the court, which led to his conviction and sentencing.
