“Tounes Al-Irada” Congress: towards consensus on appointment of Moncef Marzouki as party president

The three-day national congress of the “Tounes Al-Irada” Movement, which opened on Saturday morning in Tunis, continued on Saturday evening in Hammamet.

Secretary-General Adnene Moncer told reporters the congress began with a plenary meeting to elect the congress chairman and the chairmen of the sub-committees before the discussion and adoption of the congress’ rules of procedure.

“Congress delegates will be divided on three committees for the discussion of the main motions of the congress, namely the motion on the local power, the organisation motion and the social and political motion, he said.

He added that a fourth committee would be set up to discuss the rules of procedure that would be debated and adopted in the evening before the kickoff of the elective general assembly.

“We are moving towards the election of a political body and a party president who will later appoint a secretary general and members of the executive board,” he said on the other hand.

Moncer pointed out, in this connection, that the criteria for running for the party chairmanship will be determined by the rules of procedure of the Congress once they are finalised, considering that the choice will be made for the adoption of the direct appointment or self-nomination.

“There is, however, consensus on the appointment of Moncef Marzouki as the party’s president,” he pointed out.

Regarding the controversial issue of national reconciliation, the party leader said the bill “comes to protect particular interests,” stressing that his party “will block any attempt to pass it through legal and legitimate ways, especially since it is an unconstitutional and unjust law that will have unfortunate consequences.”

The first elected congress of the “Tounes Al-Irada” Movement is held under the slogan Consistency and Hope.
